about

Programme notes:

In the south of Portugal, the well-known Algarve region is located – a gloriously warm coastline blessed with stunning, sandy beaches and picturesque fishing towns. Vilamoura, a beautiful and rich town with a marina, fishing port, and several holiday resorts, is home to two main beaches. To the west lies the Praia da Falésia, and to the east: the Praia de Vilamoura. Standing on the silky, golden sands of the Praia de Vilamoura late on a scorching summer’s day, surrounded by mellow skies of blues, pinks, and purples that romanticise the seafront, the sun sets languidly for yet another evening. Few birds continue to hover, and the remnants of a hectic day on a usually busy beach still dwell some distance away. As day becomes night, the sky is illuminated with one final yet emphatic ray of light. After, all that remains to be heard is the soft and calming song of the sea gently slipping away from the tide.

Ashton's words: "This one was my favourite to write. It feels the most personal, and I am grateful to the guys for their hard work in understanding my writing and interpreting the music in their own inspiring way - it really came to life on the gig. The length of this piece is actually about the same amount of time I spent that evening watching the sun set, taking in the view. I guess it surprised me seeing the piece evolve out of that one small moment. I just hope it gives the listener the same kind of closure that I felt performing this at the end of the gig. It's something I'll always remember fondly."
